Set your pre-school child up for success with Early Years courses

As a parent, it's only natural that you want the best for your child. You want your child to succeed throughout their academic and personal life, as well as into their future career. This is something that we understand deeply at the British Council in Singapore. Our Early Years English courses are designed to teach children aged three to six years old the essential skills they need to thrive when they start school, giving them the best possible start to their learning experience.

We know that every child is different. Our highly qualified, passionate teachers take this into account when delivering our course content, so that each student has the opportunity to learn as much as possible. As part of our Early Years English language course, your child will learn in a safe and nurturing environment, alongside our teachers and their classmates.

Our enrichment courses focus on English language speaking skills including phonemic awareness, creating independent and confident readers with solid reading comprehension, building essential social skills, and developing the 21st century competencies and proficiencies identified by Singapore's Ministry of Education as essential to be able to thrive in a fast-changing world.

Learning takes place through a range of activities, games, and materials, delivered by Early Years learning experts. We believe in using active learning and hands-on exploration to develop your child's confidence in speaking, reading and socialising, while providing them with a strong foundation in English and a love of learning, so that they are able to develop their written and oral communication skills throughout their education journey.

By giving your child the opportunity to learn these critical skills at a young age, you provide them with a solid foundation for the future of their schooling and beyond. Confidence in socialisation, speaking and reading will give your child the tools they need to take on their early education years with flying colours. It will also enable them to form stronger relationships with their peers in and outside of school, as well as setting them up to succeed well into the future. The ability to read and speak in English in particular will open up doors for further education abroad and career opportunities, especially in a multi-cultural environment such as Singapore.

There are three elements to our Early Years courses, which align with the syllabus set by the Ministry of Education. The first is Learning Time with Timmy, enrichment for preschoolers. Aimed at children in Nursery 1 to Kindergarten 1 (aged three to five years old), Learning Time with Timmy was designed by the British Council's Early Years specialists to be fun and engaging, while teaching your child English and nurturing their creativity, critical thinking and social skills. It helps to build good communication skills and pronunciation, while boosting your child's self-confidence.

Our Kindergarten 2 course is designed for children aged six. This course nurtures a love of reading by equipping students with early-literacy phonic strategies, which are important in helping to develop reading confidence while preparing your child for Primary 1. We aim to help your child succeed at every stage of their academic journey, and teach them the skills needed to do so.

Reading Booster is a course for children aged six, to nurture a love of reading. By the end of the course, your child will be able to read with greater confidence and fluency. The course focuses on blending phonics, practising sight words — ie those that don't follow phonemic rules, and help your child develop reading fluency
