Catherine Gater is an equality and diversity programme manager at the British Council for English and Exams, previously specialising in Athena SWAN and other national and international accreditation schemes.

Her background is in science and she gained an MA in Metallurgy and Science of Materials from St Catherine’s College, University of Oxford. She also holds an MSc in Science Communication from Imperial College London. She has studied project management protocols such as PRINCE 2 and MBA modules with the Open University. She is a school governor, with a special interest in SEND.

She worked for several years in large-scale international facilities and in the Higher Education sector, including CERN, EMBL-EBI, the British Library, Canterbury Christ Church University and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. She previously chaired the EIROforum Working Group in Diversity and Inclusion and has experience leading international projects in the areas of diversity, computing, communications and digital cultural humanities.
